Mumbai, India

Quick! List the first five things that come to your mind when you think of India. Let me guess: Chai, Bollywood, Gandhi, Taj Mahal and… you can’t even think of a fifth! Well, there’s a lot more to India than that, and I promise to share with you what I find.

Mumbai is a city on the west coast in India, located in the state of Maharashtra, and with approximately 20.5 million residents, it is the most populous city in India. Where is it in relation to Bombay? Good question. Mumbai IS Bombay. Or rather, Mumbai was formerly known as Bombay. The name was officially changed in 1995, as part of a movement to restore regional identity.

Mumbai is the commercial and entertainment capital of India and its culture blends traditional festivals, food, and music, sharing with all who visit a city full of architecture, art, film, commerce, and color! A few fun facts about Mumbai:

  • Residents of Mumbai call themselves Mumbaikar, Mumbaiite or Bombayite.
  • The climate in Mumbai is tropical, always hot and split between wet and dry seasons.
  • Marathi, the official language of Maharashtra state, is widely spoken and understood in the city. Sixteen major languages of India are also spoken in Mumbai, including Marathi, Hindi, Gujarati and English. (PHEW – English!)
  • Cricket is the most popular sport in the city and the Mumbai cricket team has won 39 titles, the most by any team. (Go team go!)
